Fishing Icon

A World-Class Fishing Location

The waters off Santa Maria, Mozambique, are among the most productive and exciting fishing grounds in the Indian Ocean. Just beyond the iconic Hell’s Gate, warm currents and nutrient-rich reefs attract an incredible variety of pelagic and reef species.

Within minutes of launching, you have access to deep water, reefs, and migratory routes used by some of the fastest and most powerful fish in the ocean. From high-speed pelagic action to technical reef fishing, the diversity here makes every trip different — and every strike memorable.

Titan: Built for Serious Fishing

All charters take place aboard Titan, a 28-foot Gecat powered by twin 200hp Yamaha engines. The centre-console, walk-around design makes it ideal for all styles of fishing, including trolling, popping, live baiting, and drop-shotting.

The boat is fully equipped for comfort and performance featuring outriggers for trolling, a flush toilet and small cabin, a freshwater deck wash for cooling off and ample dry storage. Whether you’re an experienced angler or new to the sport, Titan is set up to deliver a safe, efficient, and highly enjoyable day on the water.

Top-Tier Tackle & Equipment

Balistidae provides a full range of premium fishing gear, ensuring you’re properly equipped for every method and target species. This is professional-grade equipment, the same calibre used by serious offshore anglers, giving you the best possible chance when the big one hits.

Tackle includes 80lb, 50lb, and 30lb setups for trolling and billfishing, Shimano and Alutecnos gear, Travella rods for drop-shotting and Shimano Stella and Saragosa reels for spinning and popping.

Target Species & Fishing Techniques

Fishing at Balistidae focuses on both pelagic and reef species, using a variety of techniques depending on conditions and guest preference. Pelagic species include King mackerel (couta), Wahoo, Dorado, Yellowfin tuna, Marlin and sailfish. Techniques include trolling with lures and bait, live bait fishing, and offshore targeting for billfish.

Reef species include Kingfish, Job fish and Amberjack. These are typically targeted using drop-shotting and vertical jigging (in permitted areas), with surface lure fishing available for more experienced anglers.

Experienced Crew & Safety First

Your skipper, Marcos, is highly experienced with an excellent safety record and deep local knowledge of the waters around Santa Maria. Supported by a skilled crew, the team will set up live bait and trolling spreads, assist during fights, guide less experienced anglers, tie knots and check terminal tackle setups.

While the focus is always on delivering an unforgettable fishing experience, safety is the top priority. The skipper makes the final call on weather conditions and whether it is safe to head out.

Charter Options

Longer trips provide the best opportunity to target trophy fish and explore more remote fishing grounds but Balistidae offers flexible fishing charters to suit different schedules and levels of ambition:

  • 4-hour trip – Focused fishing around nearby reefs just beyond Hell’s Gate
  • 6-hour trip – Extended range to productive reefs further north or south
  • Full day (9–10 hours) – Access to distant, high-potential areas such as The Well and San Joao or the prolific marlin grounds east of Santa Maria in depts of over 500m

Catch & Release Ethos

Balistidae promotes responsible fishing practices. Only a limited number of pelagic fish are kept for consumption at the villa and all Billfish and reef fish are released. With global fish stocks under pressure, the focus is on sustainability while still allowing guests to enjoy fresh, locally caught seafood.

A Seamless Guest Experience

Fishing trips are designed to integrate effortlessly into your stay at Balistidae. Snacks are included on all trips, full-day charters include a packed lunch and drinks are available and added to your villa tab. Whether you’re heading out for a quick morning session or a full day offshore, everything is taken care of so you can focus purely on the experience.

Weather & Conditions

Fishing is dependent on sea conditions, tides, and weather. Trips only proceed when conditions are approved by the skipper. If conditions change, trips may be shortened or adjusted accordingly. Flexibility is part of the experience — and ensures both safety and enjoyment.
